HomeGoods, Costco lead the pack with Q3 store visit growth

New York – Third quarter traffic trended positive for many major home furnishings retailers, but two stood out distinctly.

HomeGoods drove the sharpest increase in store visits among the home goods retailers covered in Placer.ai’s Q3 Quarterly Retail Review. For the period stretching from July through September, the TJX Cos. division saw store traffic climbed 8.1%.

Costco sailed in with traffic up 7.2% for the same period – continuing a strong run.

In a separate report that took a deep dive into Costco, Place.ai noted that the warehouse club has logged consistently positive year-over-year (YOY) foot traffic growth each month since the beginning of 2024.

“Even in January, when retail visits nationwide were severely dampened by unusually cold and stormy weather, Costco saw YOY visits increase by 5.2% – a remarkable accomplishment,” Placer.ai reported.

The location intelligence firm’s Q3 report also found solid traffic growth for BJ’s Wholesale (+5.9%), TJMaxx (+5.6%), Sam’s Club (+5.2%) and Marshalls (+5.2%).

Leading discounters Target and Walmart also received a bump in traffic during the period – but barely – with visits up 1.0% and 0.9%, respectively.

The recent report did not include department stores.
