One of the biggest joys in home ownership is getting to decorate one’s space with décor that reflects your own expressive style and personality. That’s why it perhaps comes as no surprise that nearly half of homeowners surveyed for sister pub Gifts & Decorative Accessories‘ 2025 Gift Book Consumer indicated an interest in buying outdoor accessories such as porch boards and door hangers to update their home décor.
Thanks to a surge in outdoor post-pandemic living that has enabled consumers to socialize safely, homeowners are continually seeking ways to update their decks, porches and yards with decorative accessories.
Fresh Air Fun

Due to high interest rates and limited housing inventory that has plagued the real estate market as of late, many consumers are forgoing buying a new home and instead renovating their existing spaces, helping to drive sales of outdoor décor. Products that marry function with a fun vibe do double duty for cost-conscious consumers who want to add personality to outdoor spaces without breaking the bank. According to the 2025 Gift Book Consumer Survey, 40 percent of consumers plan to buy outdoor décor, such as porch boards, wind chimes, garden flags and outdoor pillows, in the next 12 months, regardless of where they live.
As to who is refreshing their outdoor living spaces, 45 percent of Gen Xers and 54 percent of millennials are making these updates a top priority as per the 2024 U.S. Houzz Outdoor Trends Study. Among the top product picks are rugs (27 percent) and pillows and throws (26 percent).
Loving Nature
Growing concern over climate change has trickled down to consumer product development, including outdoor home décor. A recent report from TurfMutt Foundation notes an increase in planting for pollinators, helping to fuel sales of bee and honey-themed wall art, garden flags and decorative pillows.
Incorporating plants into outdoor living spaces, another noteworthy trend, brings green living to the forefront. Planters and plant stands, including weathered ceramic holders and rustic metal urns, blur the lines between indoor and outdoor design. Also of note are rain gauges disguised as garden stakes and self-watering planet globes in assorted animal motifs, including butterflies, frogs and birds.
Speaking of fine feathered friends, consumers’ interest in birdwatching is on the upswing, another carryover from pandemic living. As homeowners spend more time outdoors, birdbaths and bird feeders will become natural reflections of their new pastime. Birdcages will also tap into this design trend, particularly when used unconventionally as a hurricane lamp-style candle holder or as a rustic planter. Bird-shaped trinket trays in natural wood and embossed with uplifting messages complement outdoor tablescapes while paying homage to backyard companions.
Reversible and Versatile
Porch boards, whether expressing a general sentiment of “Welcome,” or a special message for the season, are especially popular since they make a large statement that can be seen easily from the road.
According to the 2025 Gift Book Consumer Survey, nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of consumers are willing to spend more for a product that is eco-friendly and sustainable. Reversible porch boards meet this demand by allowing consumers to refresh their porch’s appearance to reflect the current season or holiday – think three stacked pumpkins for fall on one side and a festive snowman for Christmas on the other – without having to invest in entirely new decorations. This not only adds to the overall value and profitability of the product, but also caters to eco-conscious shoppers looking to minimize waste, save on storage needs and maximize the lifespan of their décor items.
“A-door-able” Décor
Door hangers, wreaths and other art for the door are another popular choice for customers looking to personalize and refresh their home’s threshold. Adding a pop of color with a vibrant door decoration can instantly liven up an otherwise plain door, making bright florals and happy pastel hues an appealing choice, especially when paired with an uplifting or humorous message.
Finally, offering personalization options, such as monograms or custom messages, can further enhance their appeal, making them a must-have for any customer looking to add charm and character to their home.
